Dalian has four distinct seasons—one of which is a blustery winter. Long ago, street vendors created a warm-you-right-up clam noodle soup to help cope when the cold north winds. The best of the many versions ladled out around town is found at the venerable Fuhongji, located in the luxury mall Pavilion Dalian (an odd address for humble fare—but worthy of it’s place). Here, they serve up steaming bowls of chewy handmade wheat noodles swimming in a sweet, slightly viscous clam broth. Order the set with a roujiamo, pork cooked with spices and sandwiched in oven-baked northern Chinese flatbread. After lunch, make your way to the fourth floor lifestyle store and café Jade Way Space. This bright clean-lined concept store carries bespoke furniture and accessories from Korea, forward-leaning fashion by Chinese designers, a huge selection of books, and artisanal coffee.
Dalian Pavilion is on Dagong Street and Zhongshan Road, near the People’s Square, and a 20-minute taxi ride from the hotel.
